WIZARDS OF JAPANESE INDEPENDENT ANIMATION, 1960s - TODAY

The first Japanese animation films originated in the 1910s, but it would took several decades before anime started its road to global success. Usually the term anime is used synonymously with Japanese animation films, but especially in the ′60s and ′70s a vibrant and internationally successful independent animation scene aimed for a more artistic stance than its more commercial counterpart. In collaboration with the Deutsches Filmmuseum and accompanying the exhibitions at the Deutsches Filmmuseum (ANIME! High Art - Pop Culture) and the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (MANGA MANIA) in Frankfurt, we are presenting a selection of exceptional works from half a century of animation history.

Venue: Cinema at the Deutschen Filmmuseum (Schaumainkai 41, Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen)
